Here’s a snapshot of what has been happening in Westminster and West Suffolk

In Westminster

Free digital skills training

Over two million people have now benefited from free digital skills training thanks to a partnership between Government and Industry launched just eight months ago
The Digital Skills Partnership sees Government, businesses, charities and voluntary organisations join forces to give people of all ages the opportunity to boost their online know-how by offering free training in areas such as basic online skills through to cybersecurity and coding.
Digital skills training is essential to ensure that the UK can take advantage of technology and the opportunities it presents.

Better Broadband Scheme extended

A scheme which provides a £350 subsidy to enable affordable broadbanddesigned to help those people struggling with the slowest broadband speeds in the UK has been extended for another year. This scheme offers immediate assistance to those in hardest to reach places and more than 10,000 UK homes and businesses have already had their broadband speeds boosted through the initiative
There is still more to be done to get decent broadband to all and the Better Broadband Scheme helps people with the very worst broadband, to provide immediate assistance to those most in need. I’m delighted to say we are extending the scheme to help people in some of the most rural and hard to reach areas of the country.

In West Suffolk
Haverhill Family Practice

It’s very good news that the Haverhill Family Practice had been given a “good” rating by the Care Quality Commission, the watchdog for GPs. We have amazing doctors and support staff in the Practice, and through their hard work and commitment, they have been given this very welcome rating.

Fewer people in West Suffolk are receiving out of work benefits

I visited the Haverhill JobCentrePlus to talk to staff, and see what we can do together to keep unemployment falling. In West Suffolk, there are 857 few people on out of work benefits than in 2010.

The number of people claiming unemployment benefits in Haverhill continues to fall, and I saw first-hand the hard work of the staff, who work closely with employers, the council, Citizens' Advice Bureau and others to help find work for people, and help people stay in work and thrive.

Update on the A1307

I met with the A1307 Strategy Board recently and there is progress in the bid for improvements to this road.  We are now seeking funding for the Options Appraisal Report, a detailed report on the options for the road and for recommendations.  We are moving ahead with this project – it’s in everyone’s interest that changes are made to this deadly road.
