September 2017 newsletter

Here’s a snapshot of what has been happening in Westminster and West Suffolk.

In Westminster

Cyber security

In my role as Minister for Digital, we are proposing fines for essential service operators with poor cyber security. Organisations who fail to implement effective cyber security measures could be fined as much as £17 million or 4 per cent of global turnover, as part of plans to make Britain’s essential networks and infrastructure safe, secure and resilient against the risk of future cyber attacks. We want the UK to be the safest place in the world to live and be online, with our essential services and infrastructure prepared for the increasing risk of cyber attack.

By-election in West Suffolk

I was delighted that our two Conservative candidates were elected in the by-election on 17 August. Robert Nobbs (pictured) was elected to the Forest Heath District Council and James Lay to the Newmarket Town Council. They will be fantastic additions to those governing bodies.

GCSE and A-level results in our local schools

We have had an excellent set of A-level and GCSE results in our West Suffolk schools this year, with the grades in many cases, having exceeded those of last year. Huge credit has to go to the hardworking and dedicated teachers and staff and, of course, to the pupils. These commendable results are evidence that our schools are going from strength to strength and improving all the time.

OVO Energy Tour of Britain

On 8 September at 10.45am, the OVO Energy Tour of Britain cyclists will start Stage 6 at Newmarket and will ride to Aldeburgh covering 187km. It will be a thrilling spectacle – I hope you will be able to see part of the race as it heads across Suffolk and through the West Suffolk towns and villages of Exning, Worlington, Mildenhall, Eriswell and Lackford.

Social Media

In recent months, I have changed some of my social media contact details. If you are a user of social media and are interested in following me to see updates and news of the work I do both in Parliament and in the constituency, here are the links:

Did you guess Mildenhall? If so, you are correct!

Tour of the Houses of Parliament

Would you like to take a tour of the House of Commons? Tours during the morning are free for groups of up to twenty-five people. I’m always happy to arrange tours, but please do allow three months’ notice, as they are very popular. Please contact me at for further information. If you are involved with a school, then you might be interested in a visit to the Parliamentary Education Centre.
